Much Ado About Nothing

Britain Open Golf

By Ben Linton

Yesterday ESPN and Sportscenter were salivating over 59-year-old Tom Watson’s two-stroke lead going into the final day of the British Open. All this talk about he hasn’t won the Open in 32 years, Tiger Woods was seven years old and Phil Mickelson was 13 when he last won, what the price of gas was, and how many presidents had passed since his last major victory. It was annoying how they were over-analyzing and hyping this guy up. It seemed as if they had crowned him champ before the final day had begun. So to no surprise, Watson lost his lead and eventually lost the tournament as Stewart Cink won the 2009 British Open.

On the 18th hole, Watson had a birdie putt to wrap up the victory, but shanked it and entered a four hole playoff with Cink. He bogeyed the first hole then magically made par on the second. On the 3rd hole, a terrible drive on his tee shot caused him to double bogey, while Cink made par twice and birdied. Watson finished +6 in the playoff while Cink was -2, giving him his first ever major title. In the end, Watson was just too fatigued and could only play so well for so long. They say golf is a game for life, but youth previals on the highest levels.
