O’s Get Lugo

By Ben Linton

Today the Baltimore Orioles made a move by adding veteran Julio Lugo from the Cardinals. This gives the Orioles depth in the infield; Lugo is a versatile player that can play either second, shortstop, or third base.

Last season Lugo put up respectable numbers (.280 average, 3 home runs, 21 RBIs) with the Red Sox and Cardinals. At age 34 Lugo will be expected to spell Shortstop Cesar Izturis on his days off, kind of like Robert Andino did last year.

Speaking of Andino, it seems as if he may be traded due to the new acquistion of Lugo. Opening Day rosters will be set this Sunday, and if Andino is not on the roster he will either have to be traded or released. In order to make room for Lugo on the roster, the O’s designated Michael Aubrey for assignment.

This is another solid acquisition by the O’s upper management to bring in a veteran with experience. Although Lugo will not have as big of an impact as Tejada or Milwood, who will have starting roles, he can still come in a relieve Izturis or Roberts without skipping a beat. He will be a reliable fielder and solid hitter to depend on and possibly mentor the younger players.

This move basically just helps answer a couple questioned raised about the infield, mainly due to and herniated disk in the lower back of All-Star Second Baseman Brian Roberts.  Stay tuned  for when the O’s release the opening day lineup and check out the season preview coming soon.
