Caps Update

By Jesse Jones

The past three games for the Washington Capitals have been an up-and-down roller coaster.

Last Wednesday, the rival Pittsburgh Penguins traveled to the nation’s capital.  The Penguins took an early lead, but the Caps sent the game into overtime, where it was then decided in a shootout.  Washington won 3-2 in the shootout and won the game 4-3.

Friday the team traveled to Carolina where they found themselves in another shootout.  The only difference this time was that the Hurricanes won 3-2.  Today was a similar result, but overtime was not needed.  The Calgary Flames traveled across the border to D.C. where they took an early 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back.  Behind the 31 saves from goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, the Flames won 5-3.

From what I’ve seen in these games, the team is desperately missing the explosiveness of captain Alex Ovechkin.  He has not been as hot with his stick lately, and that extra spark could get the team back on track.
