Wizards Open Season With Statement Win

Arenas Driving With Explosiveness

By Jesse Jones

19-63 was the record that the Wizards’ fans had to deal with all last season.  Once the offseason began though, a new coach was brought in (Flip Saunders), two new players were added (Mike Miller, Randy Foye), and the team got three players healthy, including All-Star Point Guard Gilbert Arenas.  Going into the preseason, all the pieces were in place for a huge turn-around, until All-Star Power Forward Antawn Jamison got injured.

Dallas had a nice offseason after a good season last year, by bringing Shawn Marion to the squad.  There are many people talking about big plans in Dallas this season.  However, one of their top players as well got injured, Josh Howard.

Both teams met last night to open the season in Dallas.  In the early minutes, Dallas came out hot.  However, after three consecutive explosive dunks by Brendan Haywood, the Wizards picked up the slack.  The team played with an aggressive intensity on both offense and defense, including Arenas, who many times gets picked on for not playing a high level of defense.

The Wizards won the game 102-91, and there were many positives:

  1. Arenas turned the Hibachi on, lighting up the Mavericks for 29 points and 9 assists.  His explosiveness is definitely back, while shooting was never in question.
  2. Andray Blatche started off the season great.  Coming off the bench, he scored 20 points and brought in 7 rebounds.
  3. In only 30 minutes off the bench, Randy Foye put up 19 points.  Caron Butler also scored in double-digits; 16.

Friday the Wizards play in Atlanta before coming home on Halloween to welcome the New Jersey Nets to the Phone Booth.
